National survey highlights perceived importance of dietary protein to prevent weight gain

Apr. 26, 2013 ? Atkins Diet, Zone Diet, South Beach Diet, etc., etc., etc. Chances are you have known someone who has tried a high protein diet. In fact, according to the International Food Information Council Foundation, 50% of consumers were interested in including more protein in their diets and 37% believed protein helps with weight loss. In a new study released in the May/June 2013 issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, researchers found a relatively high proportion of women who reported using the practice of ''eating more protein'' to prevent weight gain, which was associated with reported weight loss.

Among a national sample, researchers from the University of Minnesota surveyed 1,824 midlife women (40-60 years old) to (1) describe perceptions about protein sources and requirements, (2) identify the reported frequency of using the ''eating more protein'' practice to prevent weight gain, and (3) compare reported protein intake to reported frequency of using the ''eating more protein'' practice to prevent weight gain.

Most women correctly identified good protein sources, and the majority could indicate the daily percent of dietary energy recommended from protein. ''Eating more protein'' to prevent weight gain was reported by 43% of women (and more than half of obese women) as a practice to prevent weight gain. Reported use of this practice was related to self-reported weight loss over two years. Two factors associated with effective use of this practice included the level of protein intake and self-efficacy toward weight management.

According to Noel Aldrich, lead author, those participants' who had reported weight loss with "eating more protein" had a protein intake that was consistent with the focus on protein suggested by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. He said, "Education regarding dietary protein requirements may enhance the use of this practice. Women may need more information regarding protein energy content and effective selection of protein sources to enhance protein intake as a weight management strategy. Given that the majority of Americans are overweight, identifying the most effective practices and related factors surrounding successful weight loss and prevention of weight gain are important."

Where Will the Next Big Earthquakes Occur?

SALT LAKE CITY ? The world's largest earthquakes are also the rarest ones, making it hard to predict these terrible temblors.

So seismologists are developing new ways to forecast the biggest earthquakes, like the massive, deadly magnitude-9 and greater quakes that have occurred in Japan, Sumatra, Chile and Alaska.

"There's an agreement that the prediction of individual earthquakes is not possible and probably will not be possible," said Gert Z?ller, a mathematician at the University of Potsdam in Germany." The goal of our work is to [instead] make some statements about hazard: Here we have a region that is more dangerous, and here we have a region that is less dangerous."

Using a technique called probabilistic modeling, Z?ller and his colleagues predicted that Japan's next giant earthquake is more likely to strike the island's northern regions, he reported April 19 at the Seismological Society of America's annual meeting.

Rather than relying on one data source, such as the historical record of earthquakes, probabilistic models incorporate many different kinds and sources of earthquake data.

"We try to collect many pieces of information and put this information in a mathematical framework to estimate probability," Z?ller told OurAmazingPlanet.

Z?ller reviewed earthquake data back to the year 684 and seismometer records dating back to 1923. From analyzing that data, he was able to determine the probability of an earthquake greater than magnitude 8 occurring along Japan's subduction zone in the next 30 years. A subduction zone is where two of Earth's tectonic plates collide and one slides beneath the other.

In the Tohoku region of Japan, where 2011's massive earthquake ruptured, and northward, there is a relatively high probability of strong earthquakes. To the south, such as off the coast of the Tokai Nankai region, there is a relatively low probability of high-magnitude earthquakes, the researchers found.

The findings reverse the predictions of Japan's national seismic hazard map, which places the country's greatest earthquake hazard in the South. "Many people are claiming the next earthquake will be in the Tokai region, [but] our results say the northern part has higher probabilities for large earthquakes," Z?ller said.

Part of this discrepancy could be due to the time scales used in the models, Z?ller said. For instance, the map incorporates ground-shaking and includes short-term time scales, while Z?ller's forecast is time-independent, he said.

But a separate, short-term study supports Z?ller's conclusions. A forecast presented at the meeting April 19 by John Rundle of the University of California, Davis, estimated that Sendai and Tokyo ? located in northern and central Japan, respectively ? have the highest probability of a magnitude-7 earthquake occurring within one year. Kyoto has the lowest probability, which is consistent with Z?ller's report, Rundle said.

Insurer Aviva to cut 2,000 jobs worldwide: source

(Reuters) - British insurer Aviva PLC will cut as many as 2,000 jobs worldwide in the latest cost-cutting drive aimed at revitalising its flagging fortunes, a source close to the company told Reuters on Thursday.

In an internal memo obtained by Reuters, Chief Executive Mark Wilson told staff the cuts would equate to around 6 percent of Aviva Group's global workforce and reiterated a commitment to deliver more than 450 million pounds ($685.56 million) in cost savings by the end of the year.

According to Aviva's annual report, the insurer employs around 31,200 people, as of December 31.

Aviva is progressing with a root-and-branch shake up of its business after years of spiraling costs, disappointing share price performance and an investor revolt that led to the departure of former chief executive Andrew Moss in 2012.

Chairman John McFarlane sought to appease angry investors with a comprehensive strategic review last July, which called for the sale or closure of more than a dozen underperforming and non-core business units. ($1 = 0.6564 British pounds)

Healthy Breakfast Ideas: What Nutrition Experts Eat In The Morning

They don't call it the most important meal of the day for nothing!

Breakfast -- when done right -- can set the tone for a more nutritious day with big health pay offs.

Regular breakfast eaters feel more alert, are less likely to become obese and are all-around healthier, with even perhaps a reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease, according to 2003 research.

But knowing to eat before the clock strikes noon is different than knowing what to eat. More often than not, we prioritize convenience in the morning (yes, we know, you're in a rush) over nutrition. But "quick and easy" doesn't have to mean unhealthy. We asked the people who know best to share with us their go-to, good-for-you breakfast ideas. To find out what nutrition experts themselves swear by in the a.m., click through the slideshow below.

  • Almond Butter On Toast And Fresh Fruit

"I rotate four main breakfasts: What: Oatmeal with nuts/seeds and chopped fresh fruit When: Particularly good on hungry mornings What: Green smoothie When: I've had a bigger dinner and am not super hungry or if it's a hot day and I want something refreshing What: Pesto tofu and spinach scramble with sprouted whole-grain toast When: I have a little extra time and I want something savory instead of sweet What: Almond butter on sprouted whole-grain toast with fresh fruit When: I am in a big rush. Such an easy grab-and-go breakfast!" -- Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, CSSD, LDN

  • Scrambled Eggs In Pita

"One of my favorite breakfasts is two scrambled eggs in one teaspoon of olive oil. I slice a six-inch whole-wheat pita in half and stuff half the eggs in each. I top the eggs with one ounce shredded cheddar cheese and salsa. Today I added a tangerine, but I always have some type of fruit for breakfast. I want my calories to work for me, so I choose nutrient-rich foods nearly all the time. My breakfast always has one serving of each of the following: whole grains, dairy and fruit, and about 20 grams of protein to keep me full." --Elizabeth M. Ward, MS, RD

  • English Muffin Pizza

"Pizza for breakfast! Split and toast a whole-grain English muffin and top each half with tomato sauce, part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan and a shake of crushed red pepper. Pop them in the oven and broil until the cheese is hot and bubbly. So easy and 100 percent delicious!" -- Joy Bauer, MS, RD, CDN

  • A Peanut Butter And Banana Smoothie

"Many days I have a smoothie made with: skim milk, low-fat Greek yogurt, frozen banana, one to two tablespoons of flax meal, one to two tablespoons of peanut or almond butter and ice. Or I have a home-made whole grain waffle (I make extra over the weekend and toast in the mornings) with peanut butter and topped with fresh blueberries and a glass of skim milk." -- Susan Mitchell, Ph.D., RD

  • Scrambled Egg With Cheddar And Tomato

"A few things I love: Whole wheat toast and a scrambled egg with cheddar and grapefruit sections, or Triscuits and a piece of cheddar cheese and grapefruit sections, or a bowl of cereal with milk. And I like to start the day with a low fat chocolate milk or a cup of OJ. For cereal, I suggest picking one with at least three to five grams of fiber per serving and no more than double that amount in sugar. Topping cereal with fresh berries and/or nuts or seeds and nonfat milk gets in lots of food groups and key nutrients to fill you up and get you going in the a.m." -- Elisa Zied, MS, RDN, CDN

  • Kefir And Strawberries

"Here's the truth: I usually eat two breakfasts! I usually have a glass of kefir with pur?ed strawberries at about 7:30 or 8. Then at about 10 or 11, I'll have something more substantial, often scrambled eggs and salsa or a frittata made with leftover vegetables from the night before. The kefir alone wouldn't be enough to power me through until lunch, but I'm not hungry enough first thing to eat a bigger breakfast. The other advantage is that the kefir is light enough that I can go to the gym or do a powerwalk immediately after drinking it without feeling weighed down." -- Monica Reinagel, MS, LDN

  • Cottage Cheese With Cereal And Fruit

"I love this because the protein in the cottage cheese and Grape Nuts keeps me full. I use: 1/2 cup Daisy Brand Low Fat Cottage Cheese 1/4 cup Grape Nuts (original) 1/4 cup fresh California strawberries" -- Katherine Brooking, MS, RD, co-founder of AppforHealth.com

  • Pink Smoothie

I have rolled oats with chia seeds and cinnamon and maple syrup during some autumn and winter cold mornings. But during warmer months, I have a protein smoothie before workouts. Recipe: 2 scoops whey (or other) protein powder 1 ripe banana 1 cup fresh/frozen organic blueberries, strawberries and raspberries 8 ounces unsweetened almond/coconut milk 1 tablespoon coconut butter 1 teaspoon maca powder 1 teaspoon camu camu powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch pink Himalayan salt Blenderize and top with cacao nibs or beans, golden flax seeds and chia seeds. Serves two. -- Rochelle Sirota, MS, RD, CDN

  • Cherry Vanilla Oatmeal

"I enjoy two breakfast choices: Cherry Vanilla Oatmeal: Old-fashioned oatmeal slow cooked with dried cherries. I add vanilla bean and vanilla extract. Drizzle in warm honey. Florentine Omelet: Egg whites with sauteed spinach, onion and red pepper, melted jack cheese and a slice of whole grain toast. -- Angela Ginn-Meadow, RD, LDN, CDE

  • Protein-Filled Pancakes

"My favorite protein pancakes! Recipe: 1 small ripe (overripe is perfect) banana 2 eggs or 4 egg whites 1 tablespoon peanut or almond butter Pinch of cinnamon, if desired Drop of vanilla or almond extract, if desired Instructions: 1. Mash the banana, add the egg and mix well. Stir in nut butter and any spices or extract. 2. Heat a nonstick skillet on medium heat and use some oil or nonstick cooking spray to ensure the pancakes don't stick. Pour a large spoonful of batter into hot pan and cook until browned on one side (three minutes or more), flip and brown the other. -- Julie Upton, MS, RD, CSSD

He's Gay? No surprise - Empty Closets - A safe online community for ...

OMFG. I am SO GLAD that you shared this here on Empty Closets! I will try to be as non judgemental, and understanding as I possibly can with this guy, but just know; that I am on your side here. My ex boyfriend was EXACTLY like this, (only difference being of course, that he had to constantly convince me that he was undeniably and absolutely attracted to men) and despite all the insurmountable bullshit he put me through, with constant denial, and lying, that is just so exhausting and sickening; he still reels me in. I stayed in the relationship for a lot longer than was healthy, and REALLY, in hindsight; it was never healthy to begin with. Anyway, getting back to you here...I DON'T GIVE A FLYING F***, if he has an ultimate form of sexual addiction, is as horny and sexually promiscuous as a bull on Viagra, or is as bisexual as god damn David Bowie...NOTHING...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...excuse's what he has done to you, and what he has put you through!!!! OMG. I literally can feel your pain, feel your immense anger, and feel your disgust! This scenario is really raw for me, because of my own experience with my ex boyfriend. I think, he should have SORTED himself the F*** OUT; before beginning a relationship with you, and even worse; getting you pregnant and than taking off, to indulge his sexual promiscuity. GOD!!. This is why I really have an absolutely difficult time, in accepting bisexual people, who aren't authentic to themselves, and to everyone else, especially those that they are suppose to be loyal and committed too. And, if he is ACTUALLY gay, than the EXACT same rule and principle applies! SORT YOURSELF OUT, before hurting people, and causing untold damage, that NEVER had to be inflicted. Right now, I am so angry for you, and so disgusted in this man's deplorable behaviour, and treatment! I don't blame you at all, for keeping your child away from him, because he has ABSOLUTELY zero respect, and unconditional love, for the both of you!!! I wish I could do more to help you, honestly; but at least I can give you my viewpoint, of where I stand with this man, and with your situation! PLEASE, keep updating on this website, and you will find, it will REALLY help! Personally; I think you should..CUT HIM OFF completely, and leave him with your dignity in tact; before you justifiably murder him in the night! LOL

Facebook reveals Home launcher for Android?

"Today we're finally gonna talk about that Facebook phone," said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, as he took the stage at his headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., to reveal Facebook Home, a new launcher that the social network will offer for Android phones.

The service ? available for download April 12 from Google Play ? is a launcher that works with apps that are already in your phone.

Tap your face and you can get options to go to the app menu, or straight to a messaging app, or to Facebook. The app launcher is customized, but includes apps that you got from Google Play (or sideloaded). These are not Facebook apps, like the games you'd play on the Facebook website.

"Cover feed" lets you scroll through updates, with huge, upright-oriented photos. If a post has comments, you can tap to see all of the comments, and respond to comments inline. There is also a notification pane, with SMS, messages and the most important posts appearing there.

"Chat heads" is a persistent messaging widget that appears in other apps. Facebook demonstrated a chat head over a New York Times app, and showed how a whole conversation can happen without leaving the app.

Some Android phones will have access to the free software, but HTC and AT&T will release the first phone with Home pre-installed, appropriately named the HTC First. It will go on sale April 12, and is available for preorder now from AT&T.

In the coming months, Home will also work on the HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy Note II, as well as on the forthcoming HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 as well as on more devices.

Why didn't Facebook opt to build its own phone? "A great phone might sell 10 or 20 million units at best, but our community has over 1 billion people. Even if we built a really good phone, we'd only be serving 1 percent" of Facebook users, said Zuckerberg.

So Facebook is aiming at the home screen of every Android phone. "It sets the tone for your whole experience," he said.

"They have tried this before with little success," analyst Jeff Kagan said, pointing to previous smartphones with physical Facebook buttons.

Don't expect to see Facebook Home for Apple's iOS. Unlike Google, Apple does not allow launcher apps like Facebook Home.

With Home, Facebook is after the 750 million Android devices out there (actually, that number was released in March, odds are that there are significantly more activated Android devices at this point).

As long as the device has access to the Google Play store, it'll have the opportunity to become a "Facebook Phone."

And that's the catch: With so much functionality, will Facebook Home fly in the face of Google, by taking over the aspects of Android that Google ? the mobile operating system's lord protector ? tends to control?

"The reaction from Google will be interesting to see," mobile industry consultant Chetan Sharma told NBC News. "There's obviously overlap ... It seems to Google that it's underpinning their Google+ efforts. Longer term, I don't see them letting it go and letting other people do their work."

Additionally, Facebook doesn't just give Google+ a swift kick ? the social giant's gotta make some money, so odds are that it won't stop its invasion of Android with just the Facebook Home launcher.

Messaging, video chat, photos, these are services that Google may begrudgingly share with Facebook, because other software available in the Google Play store offers similar functionality.

But what happens when Facebook tries to push its own monetized apps ? Zynga games, for instance ? through the Facebook interface? That could prove to be the ultimate showdown with Google.

"Google takes their commitment to openness on Android seriously," Zuckerberg told reporters.

"Their operating system is designed from the ground up to support these things. It is theoretically possible that they will go back on [keeping it open], but I don't think this will happen. ? It would have to be a 180 (degree turn) on their philosophy."

You can view the entire Facebook Home presentation keynote here.

Youngest world record-holder Muir dies aged 60

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Former South African swimming great Karen Muir, the youngest-ever world record holder in any sport, has died of breast cancer aged 60, South African media reported on Tuesday.

Muir was elected to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1980 having set 15 world records in the backstroke at 100 metres, 200 metres, 110 yards and 220 yards.

Her first was in the 110-yards event at the 1965 ASA National Junior Championships in Blackpool, England aged 12 years, 10 months and 25 days, making her the youngest world record holder in any sport.

Muir also won 22 South African Championships and three U.S. National Championships, but never competed at the Olympic Games because of the sports boycott imposed on her country.

Muir went on to qualify as a doctor and emigrated to Canada where she practised until her death.
