(AP) ? The fog lifted Sunday and revealed a familiar sight: Tiger Woods in command at Torrey Pines.

Woods had great control of his tee shots and began to pull away from the field with a 3-under 69 in the third round to build a four-shot lead in the Farmers Insurance Open. Fog wiped out all of Saturday, so players were going as long as daylight allowed and returning Monday to complete the tournament.

Woods was likely to get in about six holes of the fourth round. Woods, with his first outright 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour since 2009, was at 14-under 202.

Brad Fritsch, a PGA Tour rookie from Canada, had a 70 and was at 206. Erik Compton finished birdie-eagle for a 71 and was five shots behind.

Fix It And Forget It With This Home Improvement Advice | OK Heyday ...

TIP! Have your list ready before you go shopping for home improvement items. Having this list of items will allow you to visit the store just one time and will help you be organized.

Too many people are afraid of tackling home improvements. It may take a lot of time, money, and it may create a large mess. By understanding what you are getting yourself into, you will have less to worry about. A few good tips can make any difficult home improvement job look easy. Following are a few tips to help you along your way.

TIP! It is important to make a plan before beginning any renovation project. This helps you stay on budget and within the time frame you set for yourself.

It is possible to add a great deal of value to your home if you add a second bathroom. In practical terms, having another bathroom is very useful, especially if it is on a different floor than an existing bathroom. It is very likely that multiple household members will need access to the bathroom simultaneously.

Stucco happens to be a good alternative when replacing the siding on the outside of your home. Stucco is simple to install, but you may need the guidance of a professional in order to do so correctly. Stucco also has incredible staying power.

TIP! Consider arranging your tools, not by the type of tool, but by what type of project you will need them for. For example, you may dedicate an entire toolbox to tools that are used mostly for plumbing projects: pipe wrenches, caulking, or pipe fittings.

Re-caulking the windows in your home will hep you save on utility bills. This prevents moisture from seeping in and causing mold growth, and it keeps drafts out, which can lower your heating bills. If you caulking is cracked you can remove it by taking a chisel to it and replacing it.

TIP! Always focus on having the best lighting. A bright room normally is very inviting towards anyone who enters the home.

Get new appliances and save on your utility bills. Replacing aging appliances with energy-efficient upgrades will reduce your utility bills and improve the value of your home. TIP! If you are working on several projects within the same room, carefully plan the order in which you complete them. For instance, if you?re replacing your floor and cabinets, it would probably be best to start with cabinets.

If you take the time to get thoroughly organized, you will be successful with your project. Solid tips will help you keep your project schedule, help you stay under budget and eliminate the hassle that comes with this kind of work. A little knowledge on the subject is what you need to get your through any home improvement that you care to make.

Economist: Euro crisis could erupt again this year

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? A top U.S. economist is warning that the eurozone debt crisis could erupt again this year if European leaders do not move faster to solve their problems.

Barry Eichengreen says recently calm eurozone financial markets "have swung from undue pessimism to undue optimism."

He warns that the crisis in the 17-country currency group "is going to heat up again in 2013." He spoke at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos.

Eichengreen, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, says markets need to see quicker action to set up a banking supervisor at EU level, along with a centralized way to restructure failed banks.

That would keep bad banks from bankrupting governments through bailouts. Leaders are still debating how to implement it.

Venezuela's vice president says he's target of assassination plot

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro said unidentified groups had entered the country with the aim of assassinating him and the head of the National Assembly as President Hugo Chavez recovers from cancer in Cuba.

Maduro provided no proof of the claim, made at a rally on Wednesday to mark the end of a dictatorship in the OPEC nation 55 years ago, but he said action would be taken shortly.

"For several weeks we've been following groups that have infiltrated the country with the aim of making attempts on the life of (Assembly head) Diosdado Cabello and my own," Maduro told a crowd of red-shirted "Chavista" supporters. "They will not manage it against either of us."

Chavez named Maduro as his preferred successor before he went to Cuba in early December for surgery, his fourth operation in 18 months for an undisclosed form of cancer in his pelvis that was first diagnosed in mid-2011.

Chavez has not been seen in public nor heard from since then. Venezuela's government says his condition is improving after he suffered multiple complications caused by the December 11 surgery.

Officials say he is in "good spirits" but no date has been set for his return home. Maduro said he and the energy minister would travel to Havana on Wednesday to see Chavez.

"NONSENSE"

Uncertainty over the 58-year-old president's fragile health has raised the specter of political instability in the deeply polarized South American country of 29 million people.

During his 14 years in power, Chavez has repeatedly accused Venezuela's "traitorous" opposition leaders of plotting to kill him, but offered little proof.

The opposition says the charges are a smokescreen to distract from Venezuela's daily problems such a shortages of staple goods, high inflation and one of the worst crime rates in the world.

"Now Maduro comes with the little story that we want to see an attempt against his life and that of Al Capone," opposition leader Henrique Capriles said on Twitter, referring to Cabello as the Prohibition-era U.S. gangster. "Absolute nonsense!"

Both the opposition and the ruling Socialist Party had originally planned large marches for Wednesday January 23.

It is an emotive date for Venezuelans that recalls the day in 1958 when military dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez fled the country amid widespread riots and a coup by rebel soldiers.

That had raised the possibility of supporters clashing in the streets, but the opposition subsequently decided to hold a meeting instead at a large hall in eastern Caracas.

In the city center, three separate marches by Chavez supporters converged on the 23 de Enero neighborhood, which was named after the day Jimenez was toppled from power. The demonstrations were smaller than other protests held in recent months.

Wearing a red and white tracksuit and speaking from the stage, former bus driver Maduro said the words the opposition used about him and Cabello - an ex-army buddy of Chavez - betrayed their disdain for Venezuela's poor.

"It is the condescending language of an oligarchy that will never understand who we are, who Chavez is, who the people are," Maduro told the crowd, many of whom waved posters of Chavez or wore T-shirts emblazoned with the image of his eyes.

"They say 'We must to get rid of that little lieutenant and that bus driver,'" Maduro said. "Don't be surprised by the actions that are taken in the coming hours and the coming days. The criminals who infiltrate our country can't ask for mercy."

Sneijder joins Galatasaray pending a medical

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:56 p.m. ET Jan. 20, 2013

MILAN (AP) -Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder has agreed to join Turkish club Galatasaray.

Galatasaray said on its website Sunday that it reached a deal with Sneijder pending a medical, which is expected to take place Monday.

The contract is for a reported three and a half years and worth ?5 million ($6.66 million) per season.

Galatasaray agreed to a transfer fee of ?7.5 million ($10 million) with Inter earlier this month for the Netherlands captain.

"I'm really enthusiastic about going to Turkey," Sneijder told Galatasaray's television channel. "I've heard that so many people are waiting for me in Istanbul, I know the Turkish fans are fantastic.

"I'm happy to play for a club like Galatasaray. I can't wait to play my first game and to meet (coach) Fatih Terim. Together we'll do great things. I'll make him proud to have bought me."

Sneijder joined Inter Milan in 2009 and has helped it to a number of trophies, notably the treble of the Italian League and Cup and the Champions League in 2010.

He was seen as one of the top players available in this January transfer window after falling out with club officials at Inter. In November, Inter technical director Marco Branca said Sneijder would not play until he made a decision about his future, with a new deal reportedly requiring him to take a pay cut.

Grant helps district promote health - South Sound - The Olympian ...

LISA PEMBERTON | Staff writer ? Published January 21, 2013 Modified January 20, 2013

The Tumwater School District is halfway through its comprehensive effort to fight childhood obesity, and last week?s Family Health and Fitness Night gave attendees a little taste of what that effort looks like.

About 125 people attended Tumwater School District?s Family Health and Fitness Night last Monday.

The free event ? which featured about 20 booths and activities in the Black Hills High School gymnasium ? was designed to give families and community members a chance to learn about the health and fitness options in South Sound, said organizer Tanya Greenfield.

Participants included South Sound YMCA, Slow Food of Greater Olympia, Providence St. Peter Hospital, several school district programs and the Health Child Weight Coalition.

?I like it,? said parent Bernita LaCroix of Tumwater, as her young son and daughter worked their way through an obstacle course. ?I want to see more of a push toward physical activity in the schools, and healthy eating.?

And that?s exactly what the 6,250-student district is trying to do.

The district is in the middle of a three-year Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The funding, which was just over $1 million, was awarded so that the district could implement comprehensive physical activity and nutrition programs for its students in an effort to fight childhood obesity.

Officials used some of the funding last year to purchase PE equipment, collect baseline fitness measurements and data, create a School Health Advisory Council to examine and improve school meals, and send PE teachers to curriculum training.

This year, the district is purchasing additional fitness equipment ? including cardio machines and spin bikes ? for its two high schools, said Greenfield, who coordinates the grant. It?s also hosting several events, including the health and fitness night and a series of community cooking classes.

Black Hills horticulture teacher Roger Bessey says he thinks the grant has sprouted more interest for school-based community gardens.

During the health and fitness event, students gave away samples of pesto sauce that they created courtesy of the Black Hills organic garden. Earlier in the school year, the students hosted a community dinner that featured pumpkin pies, roasted sunflower seeds, Swiss chard wraps and other items from the school garden?s bounty as well.

?I think the PEP grant added the wholesome component,? said Black Hills family and consumer science teacher Bonnie Sinclair. ?It?s not just about fitness. It?s your health and activity and the whole lifestyle that goes with being healthy.?

Next year, the district plans to use the money to purchase heart rate monitors that will collect data for students in grades K-12, Greenfield said. The information will be entered into a database so that students? measurements can be tracked to see if the district?s efforts are helping reduce obesity levels in the long term, Greenfield said.

Some of the Black Hills students who helped put on the event say they have already seen results from the PEP grant.

?I?ve noticed that people are more interested in being healthy,? said ninth-grader Tasha Nation, 14.

?It?s also taught us how we can make a difference,? added ninth-grader Maddie Hendrickson, 15.

Meet the FindLaw Team: FindLaw Copywriter Tanya Brody - The ...

Welcome to another post from our "Meet the FindLaw Team" series. "Meet the FindLaw Team" provides insight into the day-to-day lives of our colleagues. Today we feature FindLaw Copywriter II Tanya Brody. Get to know Tanya by reading about her experiences at FindLaw below.

What is your current title?
Copywriter II

When did you join the FindLaw team and how did you get here?
I joined FindLaw as a contractor on October 31st of 2011. I knew this would be a fun place to work when I saw all the Halloween costumes running around the office. I was introduced to FindLaw through a recruiting agency, which posted that they were looking for copywriters in Minneapolis via LinkedIn.

Prior to joining FindLaw, I have been a professional costumer, full time performer and touring musician, playing Celtic music all over the country, a booking agent and a small business owner. My resume is wide and varied and includes building Muppets for VEE Corporation (the company that produces Sesame Street Live) and working as a creative consumer for a local marketing company. I have also been a professional actor and done many shows around town. I continue to perform solo as a Harper/Singer/Songwriter and as part of The Idisi, a local women's chorus.

What interests you most about lawyer marketing or your functional area?
I strive to be that bridge between lawyers (who speak "lawyer") and their potential clients (who don't speak lawyer.) It can be a delicate and interesting balance, depending on the client. My love of language and writing come into play a lot during my regular working hours.

What activities does your work day typically involve?
I spend a lot of time educating our clients on what our best practices are and why they are good ideas. I also spend a lot of time writing (of course) and corresponding with colleagues on various projects.

What are your interests outside of FindLaw?
I play the harp, as well as several other instruments, sing and write songs. I knit, sew and spend the summers puttering in my garden. I enjoy sailing and many other activities involving water. (I live near a lake.) I write fiction to clear my mind of my "day job." I also spend a lot of time researching gluten free recipes on the Internet and coming up with entertaining ways to not eat wheat.

PFT: Browns add Turner as offensive coordinator

NorvousAP

As expected, the Browns have hired as their offensive coordinator a guy who on three prior occasions has done well enough as an offensive coordinator to get hired as a head coach.

Norv Turner, fired last month by the Chargers, becomes the new offensive coordinator in Cleveland.

?Norv has been one of the most respected offensive coaches in the NFL over the last 25-30 years,? Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said,? ?and he has had a tremendous amount of success at each one of his stops ? as a position coach, coordinator and head coach.? I was able to learn a great deal in the time that I worked for him in San Diego, and I expect that having him as our offensive coordinator will make a big impact on that side of the ball.?

Turner first rose to prominence as the offensive coordinator of the Cowboys in the early 1990s, parlaying that assignment into two Super Bowl rings and the head-coaching job in Washington.? His affinity for feeding the ball to a workhorse running back is good news for Trent Richardson, which at a minimum balances out concerns arising from Chudzinski?s revolving-door use of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.? On five occasions, Turner?s offense has created the NFL regular-season rushing champ.

The Browns also have hired receivers coach Scott Turner, offensive line coach Mike Sullivan, and strength and conditioning coach Brad Roll.? Special-teams coordinator Chris Tabor and offensive line coach George Warhop will remain with the team.

It appears that the Browns will, at least for now, have two offensive line coaches.

The team has said nothing about the defensive staff, which could mean that a new one will be hired.

Partnership with EchoLight Studios will Give Liberty University Filmmakers Wide Exposure

Lynchburg, VA (PRWEB) January 15, 2013

Equipped with the latest, cutting-edge filmmaking technology and in partnership with?EchoLight Studios, a world-class Christian film studio, the?Cinematic Arts?program at Liberty University is prepared to become a major force in the filmmaking industry.

The new partnership includes a five-year, multimillion-dollar agreement wherein EchoLight will finance, produce, and handle worldwide distribution for five full-length feature films in collaboration with Liberty Motion Pictures.

?The Liberty Cinematic Arts program already is known for state-of-the-art equipment, hands-on filmmaking, experienced faculty, and a rare commitment to storytelling,? said Stephan Schultze, Cinematic Arts Center executive director. ?Even among film schools, this is an amazing new level: a promise to the Liberty Cinematic Arts program that its best work has distribution on a worldwide stage.?

LibertyLiberty announced plans to form a film school in May 2011 with the mission of training the next generation of filmmakers in a Christian environment. A?dedication and film festival?was held in Fall 2012 to celebrate the first full academic year.

The program offers a two-year, full-immersion cohort experience for students in their junior and senior years and has already exceeded enrollment goals.

Bobby Downes, EchoLight president and co-founder, calls Liberty?s program unprecedented.

?For the first time in history, we see the world?s largest Christian university equip students called to the cinematic arts with state-of-the-art tools and resources.?

The bridge between his company and the university, Downes said, is ?an investment in the future great artists we?ll see affect culture and society over the next decade. History is a showcase of storytellers? tremendous impact on society.?

Alex Kendrick, a pioneer of the Christian film industry and director of ?Courageous,? ?Facing the Giants,? and ?Fireproof? (the highest-grossing independent film of 2008), said the agreement propels an already promising program.

?Christians want to create meaningful entertainment, and there?s no shortage of families hungry for those movies,? Kendrick said. ?Liberty?s Cinematic Arts Center was made for a time such as this, to train and guide the next generation of storytellers using film. EchoLight Studios? commitment to finance and provide leadership will help Liberty students fulfill the Great Commission.?

So unique and attractive is the relationship with EchoLight, Schultze said, that he expects to see more industry professionals like Kendrick step in, wanting to give back as teachers, mentors, and advisers.

As Liberty embarks on this venture, EchoLight is a perfect partner. Based in Dallas, Texas, it formed in 2011 and has been groundbreaking in its own right, paving the way to make more quality movies for families of faith.

In 2012, EchoLight began releasing one movie per month, including Josh McDowell?s ?Undaunted,? Mike Norris? (son of Chuck Norris) ?I Am Gabriel,? and Corbin Bernsen?s ?25 Hill? and ?3 Day Test.?

In 2013, EchoLight has slated to release Paul Stehlik?s ?Seasons Of Gray? and Clayton Miller and Chad Gundersen?s ?Redemption,? starring ?Fireproof?s? Erin Bethea.

?The Potential Inside,? an award-winning film produced and directed by Scotty Curlee, assistant professor of cinematic arts at Liberty and a Liberty alumnus, will also be released by EchoLight in 2013.

Christopher Morrow, EchoLight?s chief global strategist and co-founder, said the firm was formed ?to do it all ? to finance, produce, and distribute ? to reach people in all the ways they watch movies wherever they are in the world.?

Their mission aligns with Liberty?s vision: to Train Champions for Christ and give them a solid platform to take their message worldwide.

With access to first-class online editing facilities, nine state-of-the-art RED digital cameras, and the only THX certified sound mixing stage on the East Coast, students of Liberty?s Cinematic Arts Center are fully outfitted to create top-quality films on campus.

Young filmmakers are learning to break down and analyze films, to create and write screenplays, and to master all technical aspects of filmmaking through the school?s ?learn by doing? approach.

?We?re seeing a one-of-a-kind incubator for the next generation of Christian filmmakers,? Schultze said. ?What a time, what an open door to turn life-changing stories into life-changing films.?

Every graduate of Liberty?s Cinematic Arts program will leave the school with a completed screenplay, a business plan to market and fund it, a short film they have written and directed, and real-world career experience, including a feature film credit and work with industry veterans.

This fall the program will have 70 students and is expected to grow to 200 by 2015.

?Liberty is inviting potential filmmakers to ?change chairs,?? Schultze said. ?This is a real opportunity for film fans to get out of their theater seats and into the director?s chair. The real winners will be millions of audience members longing for high-quality films that reflect their values.?

Liberty University, located in Lynchburg, Va., is the world?s largest Christian university. Nearly 100,000 students attend classes on its 6,800-acre residential campus and study in its thriving?online education?program.

(AP) ? Millions of devout Hindus led by naked ascetics with ash smeared on their bodies plunged into the frigid waters of India's holy Ganges River on Monday in a ritual they believe can wash away their sins.

The ceremony in the northern city of Allahabad took place on the most auspicious day of the Kumbh Mela, or Pitcher Festival, one of the world's largest religious gatherings that lasts 55 days. The festival continues until March 10.

Top festival official Mani Prasad Mishra said nearly 3 million people had bathed by late morning and 11 million were expected to enter the frigid water by the day's end.

Over 110 million people are expected to take a dip at the Sangam, the place where three rivers ? the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati ? come together at the edge of this North Indian city. There are six auspicious bathing days, decided by the alignment of stars, when the Hindu devout bathe to wash away their sins and free themselves from the cycle of death and rebirth.

A sea of humanity assembled on the river bank as people waited patiently for their turn to step into the water. Men in underpants, women in saris and children ? naked and clothed ? chanted from Hindu scriptures as they walked into the icy-cold water.

The bathing process was initiated by religious heads of different Hindu monasteries who reached the bathing points, called ghats, riding silver chariots. Some were carried on silver palanquins, accompanied by marching bands. Applause rose from tens of thousands of pilgrims waiting behind barricades as the religious heads set off the ceremony.

The heads of the monasteries threw flowers on the devotees as they shouted "har har gangey," or Long Live Ganges.

The biggest spectacle was that of the Naga sadhus, or ascetics, who raced to the river wearing only marigold garlands in a cacophony of religious chants.

About 50,000 policemen have been deployed to keep order at the festival, fearing everything from terrorist attacks to the ever-present danger of stampedes of pilgrims. Several squads policemen on horseback regulated the flow of pilgrims to and from the bathing ghats.

According to Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela celebrates the victory of gods over demons in a furious battle over a nectar that would give them immortality.

As one of the gods fled with a pitcher of the nectar across the skies, it spilled on four Indian towns- Allahabad, Nasik, Ujjain and Haridwar. The Kumbh Mela is organized four times every 12 years in those towns. Hindus believe that sins accumulated in past and current lives require them to continue the cycle of death and rebirth until they are cleansed. If they bathe at Ganges on the most auspicious day of the festival, believers say they can rid themselves of their sins.

Tens of thousands of pilgrims slept the night on the vast festival grounds in more than 1 million tents ? green, blue, and brown ? erected all over, while many huddled together under trees. Some 20,000 makeshift toilets have been have been erected, while 10,000 sweepers have been deployed to keep this make-shift tent town clean.

U.S. regulators say Boeing 787 is safe but needs review

LONDON (Reuters) - The first official portrait of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, popularly known by her former name Kate Middleton, was unveiled in London on Friday, and opinion was sharply divided over an image many deemed unflattering. The 31-year-old, who as a glamorous future queen is one of the world's most photographed women, is portrayed in the large canvas with a faint smile, long, copper-tinted hair and shadow under her eyes. ...

Politics and economics, not troops, will decide Afghanistan's future

As Afghan President Hamid Karzai visits Washington to discuss a bilateral strategic agreement between the United States and Afghanistan, policymakers and the public are debating the pace of troop drawdown and the residual force post-2014, when the security handover to Afghan authorities finishes. Missing from these discussions is a focus on the political and economic transitions underway in Afghanistan - areas that will serve as greater determinants of Afghan stability than whether there are zero, 4,000, or 9,000 U.S. troops. Politics ultimately drive the Afghan conflict, and its resolution will require a broader political consensus and stronger economic foundation than currently exists.

President Karzai's visit offers an opportunity for the Obama administration, members of Congress and others to drill down and express support for a number of political and economic priorities, which could assist in strengthening the legitimacy and competence of the Afghan state as the United States and NATO drawdown. The current Afghan state is deeply flawed and has alienated many Afghans due to its exclusive and predatory nature.? The constitutional system, which vests great power in the hands of the executive without real checks and balances, lends itself to abuses of authority. Officials often use formal state institutions to support their patronage networks, fueling high levels of corruption, cronyism, and nepotism on the national and local levels. ?What's more, the dependency of the Afghan government and its security forces on high levels of international assistance for the foreseeable future, especially in a time of global austerity, threatens to undermine a sustainable transition.

Creating a stronger political consensus and a more solid economic foundation for the Afghan state will be required for long-term stability in Afghanistan. In their meetings with President Karzai and his team, senior U.S. officials must state their expectations about these political and economic processes, clarifying that long-term security support is contingent on Afghan progress on these efforts.? Expectations should include the following:

First, a free, fair, inclusive and transparent presidential election is required in which President Karzai transfers power to a legitimately elected successor.? President Karzai must work to ensure that the electoral bodies, including the Independent Electoral Commission and an electoral complaints mechanism are independent and credible. ?The United States hopes to see parliamentary approval of the electoral laws and the implementation of a plan to ensure a successful election.?

Second, the United States supports an inclusive political reconciliation process, led by Afghans.? The United States supports outreach by President Karzai to more Afghan stakeholders, including the political opposition, women, and civil society groups, in addition to Taliban insurgents.? The United States and Afghanistan should create a bilateral mechanism to coordinate their peacemaking, public statements regarding negotiations and outreach to stakeholders, as well as to establish a venue, where representatives of the parties to the conflict can meet outside of Afghanistan or Pakistan to discuss a political settlement.?

Third, the United States remains committed to the agreements made at the Tokyo conference in July 2012 by the Afghan government and the international community. ?In addition to agreeing to provide $16 billion in civilian assistance through 2015, the international community committed to improving the effectiveness of its aid, aligning its assistance with Afghan priority programs, and providing more aid through the Afghan government's budget rather than through outside contractors.? However, the disbursements of these dollars depends on the Afghan government progressing on its own commitments, including:?

  • allowing for the Afghanistan Human Rights Commission and other civil society organizations to function freely,
  • the implementation of the Elimination of Violence Against Women Law and the National Action Plan for Women
  • enforcement of the legal framework for combating corruption and annual asset declarations of senior public officials
  • asset recovery and accountability for those responsible for the Kabul Bank crisis
  • the implementation of the Public Financial Management Plan and improvement of the management of public funds
  • improvement of Afghan budget execution
  • the development of a provincial budgeting process

Fourth, the United States supports the development of Afghanistan's mineral sector, in a way that benefits the Afghan population and not a select few.? While Afghanistan is already a candidate member of the Extractives Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), the Karzai administration should develop an Extractive Industries Development Framework that governs Afghanistan's natural wealth through an "accountable, efficient and transparent mechanism which builds upon and surpasses international best practices", as agreed to in Tokyo.? The Ministry of Mines should continue to engage with civil society in order to increase transparency in the mining sector and to respond to the needs of communities affected by mining. ??

The Obama administration must focus on political and economic priorities during President Karzai's visit.? Military aspects-troop numbers, training of the Afghan forces, and financial support to the security services-won't be enough to ensure Afghanistan's security and stability over the long term. ?Leaving behind an unprepared and expensive force to battle an insurgency that NATO has struggled to contain is more likely to create instability than lasting security. ?Instead, U.S. efforts must be focused on building a more sustainable Afghan state.

Video: Kennedy cousins open up about addiction

>>> with an eye-opening look at addiction. nearly 18 million americans suffer from alcoholism or related problems and over 38 million, over the age of just 12 years old, have used drugs illegally in the past year. in fact, prescription drug abuse now causes more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined. sadly, just one in ten with an addiction ever receive treatment. christopher kennedy knows the struggles of this all too well, has been in recovery for more than 20 years and is author of the new book "recover to live" and he joins us with his cousin, patrick kennedy . good morning.

>> good morning.

>> i guess you have the essential credentials to talk about this. you both have struggled with addiction over the years. you, christopher, have struggled really young.

>> it starts young for several folks. i had the desire to stop, had all the resources to stop and it was difficult for me. this book "recover to live" is for folks that it shouldn't just be for folks that have the resources to kick this. i wanted to give them the tools so they can start the process on their own.

>> when i first did drugs and alcohol i felt at home. i loved it. first four times i did heroin, i became violently ill. what it did to the reward center of my brain was so powerful it never occurred to me not to do it again. do you think some people are hardwired to be addicts?

>> i do. and the studies they did with rats and how profound these chemicals are on the reward center of the brain. for some folks they're really powerless not to do them.

>> patrick, this is something you've talked about openly. you had your own struggle. and sometimes relapse is part of that struggle. how long have you been sober now and how are you doing?

>> next month it will be two years. it took me leaving my public life to finally get into long-term sobriety. before, it was stopping and starting, stopping and starting. that's the case for most people with these illnesses. they're chronic illnesses. meaning they want to stop but they can't stay stopped. the key to this is acknowledging that you have an issue and understanding what that issue is. chris ' book really does a great job at bringing the experts to tell us what is the evidence base? one of the things chris and i have had access to is good treatment. most americans, they're trying to fly in the night in terms of trying to understand what's out there and what is good for them. chris ' book "recover to live" offers good guide posts to get in good treatment.

>> let's get practical about it. this is the time of year that people want to make a clean break or a fresh start . what is the essential revelation in this book? what can people really take away to help them break the addiction?

>> first of all, this is the best information available today, from people that really know this. so if you have an issue with drugs, alcohol, sex, food, gambling. also the first time, all of these behaviors and substances have been brought into one place. if you have a desire -- if you think there's harm in your life and you have a desire to change your life, look at this book. it will show you where you are and give you some really good information and ways to change behavior.

>> such a stigma still around these illnesses. and some people, you know, still look at this and think this is a failure of willpower.

>> they do. we're beginning to understand the brain much better. i started an organization called one line for research. the idea is it's the brain. we have to understand how behavior is a symptom of bad chemistry in the brain. we blame people for acting poorly, but what was the der derivitation of how they acted?

>> we see these laws that are broadening the legalization for marijuana, sometimes for medical reasons and at least in one case for recreational use.

>> the two most costliest drugs are legal, alcohol and to be alcoh tobacco.

Thesmith: Love, relationships, and other crazy things you might not ...

For the longest time I thought there might be a chance to change my situation for the better. Perhaps if I keep fit going to the gym or perhaps if I run 12-15 kilometres three times a week I can look good. My body will be attractive, potentially offsetting my other unattractive aspects. Not to blow my own trumpet but, apparently I do have a well-structured body. I do actually look pretty good when I?m fit. But the problem is not those genes, I?m actually pretty lucky with those ones, the problem is other genes. I?ve come to realise that my genetic skin problems will never be surmounted without expensive Western medicine. Screw alternative medicine or that Eastern crap. That stuff never worked. I?ve struggled with skin problems for my whole life, and I can?t really see that changing in the future. There are a number of ways I can keep on top of the problems, but suffice it to say everything has not gone to plan in my life. The skin is a huge thing. It?s the biggest organ on a person?s body and there?s a lot that can go wrong if the skin is sensitive. I have very sensitive skin. I cannot do many manual or physical tasks for too long before my hands become too dry and I have to stop. Otherwise I?m fighting to keep them from getting worse for months afterwards. This I inherited from my father?s side I believe. He?s struggled with bad skin his entire life and knows exactly what I?m talking about. The constant vigilance of what we touch and for how long, or the dangers of certain climatic changes, is intensely frustrating. The limiting nature of poor skin precludes me from many vocations and activities outright. I can spend a certain amount of time doing almost anything. It?s not a completely debilitating affliction, but there?s a limit on what I can actually do. Dad seems to cope with it all, there?s nothing holding him back from experiencing life as much as he can. He just knows how far he can go and when he needs to stop. I take a lot of courage from that. The fact he?s in a long-term relationship that?s one of the most stable I?ve ever had the pleasure of being around is remarkable to me. He?s a constant reminder this problem is only as big as I make it. But obviously I don?t know the complete story. There may be things he hasn?t verbalised about his life that would show just how much his skin affects each day. I don?t know if it?s held him back in any way, but he does have a wife and five cool kids. So I think he?s pretty successful. I?m well aware of the procedures I need to take control of my annoying skin problem, but there?s probably a long learning path ahead. I also have a problem with the skin on by face that?s led to some pretty bad scarring in the past. One could say I was hit like a ton of bricks at puberty (good old flowery language). I?m pretty jealous of those people who?ve largely escaped the terrors of adolescent skin changes. They perhaps have absolutely no idea how it feels to realise people look not at you, but at your skin condition. I inherited my facial skin problems from my mother?s side, but it?s hard to apportion blame for any of this. She also struggles and understands what it?s like to position oneself correctly with a room?s light source so as not to unnecessarily highlight the skin problems. She knows the feeling of seeing a person?s eyes flick from your skin to your eyes and realise the other person is revolted. No words can assuage realising the other person now knows you not for your intelligence or your works, but for your skin condition. They don?t say it, but they think it. I know this because for me, a person?s skin is the first thing I look at. It?s such a big part of my life that it probably plays too heavily on my conscience but it happens nonetheless. I know I probably notice my skin more than others do, but that?s hardly any consolation. Sure, we all have the little personal aspects people remember us for. In fact, I think everybody has a little something they wish people wouldn?t see. Something they wish they could conceal. Even beautiful people are remembered for superficial things. Nice clear skin is remembered in a positive way. Long straight legs are seldom forgotten. Bright eyes are recalled vividly long even after a brief introduction. And to a certain extent I think these people know what it?s like to be remembered for something they have little to zero control over. I?ve been told that none of us are perfect, but that doesn?t really help. If you?re without skin problems and are one of the beautiful people, you can?t say this. That phrase is meant to console ugly people. It isn?t meant to be uttered by beautiful people. Perhaps I?m being overly dramatic, but from experience I believe skin problems are probably the worst thing a person can have. Someone could be blind and still be normal if they have good skin. Someone could by autistic or slow and still have good skin, they would be better off in first impressions than I am. And a person could be a paraplegic and bald yet still have good skin and be more attractive than me. I know this is my perspective, but this is what I feel. The problem, I?ve come to realise, keeping me from attaining the lofty heights of a relationship with a girl, is those skin problems. If I didn?t have such a history of poor skin I wouldn?t look the way I do and I might actually be attractive to a female. It?s as simple as that, but I?m not sure how I feel about it. I understand why girls are not attracted to me. It?s an evolutionary, almost instinctual, reaction from implicitly knowing I?m in some way I?m not fit for breeding. They may not know the details as to why they?re correct, but I do. Someone like me could not survive in the wild for very long. The modern marvels of medicine and housing keep me alive every day. Take away these amenities and I?ll die from my genetics just as surely as a person would perish from living without their left leg caught on the savannah as nasty hyenas chase them down. The fact that any of my offspring will have half their DNA from my side will probably weaken the child. Women, in the deep recesses of their unconscious brain, know this. They also realise this from a purely rational standpoint. They know I?m a physically and genetically unfit partner and so they?re not attracted to me. Skin problems are a universal signal of an unhealthy lifestyle or of some sort of genetic abnormality rendering such humans unfit for breeding. The skin is a shield against all types of bacteria and viruses. If it?s damaged then bad things can happen. Without modern medicines the body would perish once the skin is broken. A female, no matter how rational they believe they are, cannot overcome the glaring fact that a person may be smart, fast, and charming but because of terrible skin problems are actually an outright preclusion.? I used to be attractive. I have had females in the past obsessed with me. That time is long gone and the reality of living as an adult, and coming to grips with my genetics is upon me. I have been asked, once or twice, why I don?t have a girlfriend and I try to avoid the topic. I usually turn the question around or a bat it away as if I don?t really want a girlfriend after all. But the truth is I do want a relationship. I know that truth deep down. Sometimes when I come home from work or go to an event, I?d love to have someone to be with. A person to talk to or unload upon with my daily troubles, to express my personal problems, to discuss whatever?s bothering me or my future plans and machinations. I?ve had to make do wrestling with everything by myself. Only rarely do I actually sit down and really discuss with another person, and I never go too far. If I had a significant other, I might actually be able to do this. I think I?d be a lot healthier. But I can?t get a girl because no girl is attracted to me, and it?s not for lack of trying either. I think I?m comfortable with that though, in a bizarre kind of way. I don?t want to turn into a weird uncle or that strange guy who?s 50 and never had a decent relationship. That should really be avoided, obviously. I think my problem is because I set my standards too high. I know my ideal woman but I know there?s simply no way I can ever get her. I don?t know if I?ve met here yet, so I honestly can?t say if I?ve given her a decent shot. But even if she?s around, I?m pretty sure I?m out of her league. There are a number of things I could probably do to ?win? her, but there will always be my skin problems to turn her away. Maybe my answer is to lower my standards and find a girl who?ll take me as I am, not as I could possibly be with some decent work. This would be the Disney thing to do. It would also be the thing that could secure a relationship. Yet for someone to take me as I am is a foolish notion. Many people have managed to find a beautiful person even though they?re not attractive themselves. Clearly they?ve actually done something to get the girl. Females aren?t stupid. They aren?t going to see the great guy hidden beneath his unkempt hair playing computer at home all alone. Females are in this game for the same reason males are. They want to find someone beautiful and smart and fun too. They can?t be seen as simple trophies or goals in themselves. Girls certainly have a ideal men to watch out for, and they have lists of ?attraction multipliers? like money, intelligence, good looks and other things. In no way are females the passive recipients of proposals one hundred percent of the time, waiting longingly on their balcony for the handsome prince to woo them. Perhaps sometimes it?s the female who is ?settling? for the man. If I?m so convinced I?m a good guy, then why don?t I do something to show it? Why don?t I work at my writing skill or try to create something that?ll garner respect from other humans? The worst thing would be to assume the person I am ?deep down? is enough for a relationship. Or that it?s enough for the beauty to be attracted to without ever having done anything to reinforce it. Perhaps narcissistically, it?s up to the other person to discover the treasure below. No, this is a na?ve way of treating yourself and others, not to mention entirely unfair. If I want to be attractive, I?ll have to actually do attractive things. I can?t just sit there and look amazing, because I?m not beautiful. There are so many other ways of being attractive, it just requires getting up and working on something to create. And what?s with the vocabulary of relationships anyway? I?ve always struggled with the idea that girls can be ?gotten? or ?won? as if they?re common objects sitting out there in the forest like so many mushrooms. To ?have? a girl is synonymous to ?having? car or a house. I can?t get there in my head. I?m not going to get into a relationship with a girl just so I can feel complete. It has to be real; it has to be more than just a next step in life. But maybe I don?t want a relationship just for the sake of having one. I?ve got nothing to prove to people. I?m pretty much always happy with the way I am right now. (That might be hard to believe when reading this moaning treatise?) Of course these happy feelings may be a little bit of the old Stockholm syndrome creeping in. Maybe I?m happy this way because I can?t change things, and my brain has to keep up. Things would be different, if they were different, after all. But I really do think I?m happy with being on my own for now. Sometimes I want to have someone to turn to, but other times I?m absolutely fine being alone. I?ve heard from wise people the best time to get into a relationship is when each person is entirely comfortable with being on their own. By all reckoning I would say now is a perfect time for me. I can?t tell if that?s a joke. It?s probably not a sex thing. And to be honest, I want a relationship I could call decent and not built around sex. Right now, females I find attractive for a potential relationship are also sexually attractive. This is hardly surprising since I?m a normally functioning male. For the base reasons of my evolution, this is driving factor to whom I?m actually attracted. After all, getting into a decent relationship for the overriding factor of sex is a terrible idea. Girls mainly stay sexually attractive for only a quarter of their lives, and once the physical attraction of youth has inevitably waned, the person is still there, just without the sexual attraction. That would be something I?d have to deal with too. Of course, men are the same. We don?t hold onto our looks forever either. But it just proves relationships built on sex or aesthetic attractions are doomed from the beginning. Perhaps this gives some legitimacy to falling in love based on love.

This could mean I simply need to become more mature and grow up from my desire for an outwardly attractive partner. This seems like a bit of wishful thinking though. After all, the reason I?m attracted to attractive people is hardwired into my brain. And as I mentioned earlier, it?s the exact reason I am not attractive to other people. It swings both ways.?

Evolution's not something to thumb one?s nose to, and there?s no getting rid of it. I?m sure the old fairy-tale that everyone?s attractive in their own way comforts many people, but I?m of the opinion most people aren?t attractive. I know I?m not going to get into a relationship with an attractive person who fits my ideal list, so there?s no reason to desire it. And there?s especially no reason to feel dejected, as I do, when it doesn?t happen. It?s just such a difficult thing to discard.

AD OF THE DAY: Pixar Monsters University trailer - Business Insider

Pixar released a trailer for "Monsters University" during last week's Rose Bowl telecast. The preview is incredibly clever ? the first half of it is exactly like the college recruitment ads that regularly play during the commercials of NCAA sporting events. The depiction of fictional MU is so lifelike, its doesn't feel animated either.

During the second part of the ad, monster characters provide student testimonials, and it's finally clear that the ad is a movie trailer. The website shown at the end of the ad, monstersuniversity.com/edu, is a real site that also acts as a spot-on parody of a real university's web page.?
