Europe needs historic comeback to win Ryder Cup

(AP) ? This wasn't the start Europe planned.

Already facing a big deficit at the Ryder Cup, Rory McIlroy needed a police escort to the first tee after mixing up his time zones. Watching TV, he saw the tee time for his singles match against Keegan Bradley listed at 12:25 p.m.

One problem: That was Eastern time. Medinah Country Club, outside Chicago, is in the Central time zone.

"All of the sudden we realized Rory was not here and we started to look for him," Europe captain Jose Maria Olazabal said. "We finally got a hold of him."

The world's No. 1 player pulled up at the clubhouse 10 minutes before he and Bradley went off, giving him just enough time to get to the tee. He came off the stairs leading to the first tee ? at 11:22 a.m. ? with a sheepish grin on his face and had no time to warm up. He promptly launched his opening drive well right of the fairway, the ball coming to rest in a nest of TV cables.

McIlroy recovered quickly, however. His approach shot landed just short of the green, and he chipped to within inches. He and Bradley gave each other their short putts and halved the hole with pars.

Europe trailed 10-6 going into Sunday's singles matches, and history favors the Americans. Yes, the U.S. delivered the largest comeback in Ryder Cup history after trailing by the same deficit at Brookline back in 1999. That was at home, though, and the Europeans will have to overcome a hostile U.S. crowd along with their four-point gap.

The fans were doing their part early, revved up by Chicago Blackhawks national anthem singer Jim Cornelison and Bradley. The Ryder Cup rookie, who's had more energy this week than a 4-year-old hopped on Pixy Stix, sprinted out to the first hole 45 minutes before his tee time, raising his arms and wiggling his fingers in a call for the fans to get even louder. They responded with a deafening roar that could be heard all over Medinah's No. 3.

But Europe has the momentum after Saturday's frenzied finish. Just when the Americans appeared to have the Ryder Cup all but locked up, the Europeans snatched the last two matches, including a spectacular performance by Ian Poulter. With his eyes bulging and fists pumping, the Englishman made five straight birdies to steal a point from the U.S. It was the only match Europe won when it trailed on the back nine.

As if that isn't inspiration enough, the Europeans are wearing the navy slacks and sweater and white polo shirt that were the trademark of their most beloved Ryder Cup player, the late Seve Ballesteros. His silhouette adorns their shirts and sweaters.

Caroline at Coastcard: Poetry Plus: Writing Workshops (1 ...

I joined others at Gainsborough Community Library in Ipswich yesterday for a Creative Writing Workshop. We were considering the topic of 'plot', which is not something that crosses my path very often in my poetry endeavours, although it certainly has a bearing on narrative poems. It made me realise (again) just how fundamental the concept of 'story' is to our lives.

The ancient Greeks knew this all too well, with their epic ring cycles that would allow the same yarn to be narrated in fresh ways. A child's version of Homer's Odyssey captured my own imagination at a young age. I went on to study and teach Classical Civilisation. We also think of Beowulf and of countless other myths and legends that became part of the warp and weft of our human society. The New Testament parables, stories told for a purpose, rely heavily on narrative. Think of 'The Sower' or 'The Prodigal Son'. Journalists tell stories. Most of us do.

But how often do we employ story-telling techniques in our poems? Should we be telling more stories if it is these tales that help us to come together and forge connections? We were talking yesterday about 'martyrdom' (among other things) as a feature that is common to many well-loved tales.'The Chronicles of Narnia', which we cited by way of example, speak for themselves at one level but also probe the heights and depths of something more - the Christian story, of good over evil, of the laying down of life for others.

The employment of an extended metaphor has been recognised as a popular and successful poetry ploy in recent years. Epic is 'out' in the traditional sense - or is it? There have been exciting re-workings of the old sagas and tales, but archaic language and sentiment have largely been abandoned or, at least, re-cast. I am currently reading 'Now All Roads lead to France' by Matthew Hollis, about the life and last years of Edward Thomas. It is fascinating to read about the Georgian poets and how very different they were to the emerging Imagists. Edward Thomas had a great gift for sharing small insights into the world of nature with his readers. Of course, he often employed narrative along the way: think of 'The Owl'. Today we worry whether it is 'enough' for a poem simply to paint a picture. Our response has sometimes been to use poetry as a vehicle for (often political) change. Adjectives and adverbs are treated with extreme caution - sorry, with caution - but are we sometimes in danger of aspiring to an art that is losing touch with its recipients? Poets may be driven to write for any number of reasons, but I found it helpful yesterday to be reminded that 'plot' is occasionally a useful tool to select from the work(shop) box.

P.S. And in case you were wondering, my organic writing in the workshop yesterday focused on an orphan, a multi-cololoured explosion and a rift in the cliff face ...

As debate looms, Romney looks to Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? His path to victory narrowing, Mitt Romney is looking to Pennsylvania to help slow President Barack Obama's momentum ahead of a high-stakes meeting on the debate stage next week.

The Republican presidential nominee was to campaign Friday in the Philadelphia area, first courting donors at a high-dollar fundraiser and then meeting voters at a midday rally.

Fresh off a promise to spend more time in the swing states that matter most, Romney will pass much of the day in a state that has not supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly a quarter-century. His campaign is not running any television ads in Pennsylvania, and aides privately concede that Obama has a significant advantage just 40 days before Election Day.

They suggest that Romney's visit ? his first to the state in more than two months ? is largely designed to raise the money needed to narrow Obama's edge in more competitive states. After raising $5 million at a Washington event Thursday, Romney is expected to generate more than $1 million in Philadelphia and an additional $7 million at a Boston fundraiser later Friday.

"We're going to have to make the right choice on Nov. 6, and you're going to make that happen," Romney told cheering donors in Washington.

Obama will also focus on raising cash Friday as he keeps his campaign close to Washington, where he has three fundraising events scheduled.

He is set to deliver remarks at a finance event at the Capital Hilton in Washington, where tickets start at $250 but go as high as $10,000 per couple. Obama will attend a smaller fundraiser at a private residence before returning to the Capitol Hilton for a third event.

On Thursday, Romney and Obama campaigned a few hundred miles apart in Virginia.

The president pledged to create many more jobs and "make the middle class secure again," while Romney focused on threats beyond American shores, accusing Obama of backing dangerous cuts in defense spending.

The Republican's message, including questions about the president's response to recent violence in Libya, comes as he tries to move beyond his long-held economic focus to help score political points and reverse a slide in the polls.

"The idea of cutting our military is unthinkable and devastating. And when I become president we will not," Romney declared at an American Legion hall in Springfield, Va.

He is expected to push a similar message on Friday in suburban Philadelphia during a rally at Valley Forge Military Academy and College.

While Romney aides are not optimistic about their chances in Pennsylvania, Republicans are not giving up on the state.

"We have an aggressive operation and ground game in place," campaign spokesman Rick Gorka said.

The state GOP is set to begin running a television ad Friday assailing Obama's economic leadership. Pennsylvania's unemployment rate, at 8.1 percent, is slightly less than the national average.

Obama and Romney are scheduled to face off Wednesday in Denver for the first of three presidential debates, which may represent the challenger's best remaining opportunity to change the trajectory of his campaign. Romney has struggled through a series of perceived missteps in weeks amid signs that confidence in the nation's economy is on the rise.

The Obama campaign released a political memo on Friday saying it expects Romney "to be a prepared, disciplined and aggressive debater."

However, it said that while the president would be laying out his vision for the coming years, Romney has "signaled that he will come to indict the president for the fact that the economy has not fully recovered from the collapse of 2008."

The Obama memo and an accompanying web video also aim to debunk claims by Romney that the president has mischaracterized the Republican's positions on the auto industry bailout, abortion and raising taxes on wage earners to cover tax cuts for multimillionaires.

Obama was expected to meet with advisers Friday to prepare for next week's debate. The president was departing Sunday for Nevada, where he planned to hold debate practice sessions near Las Vegas.

Romney has been focused on fundraising and debate preparation for several weeks, raising some questions from within the GOP about his strategy. Earlier in the week, Romney said the time had come in the campaign when he would start spending less time with donors and more time with voters in swing states.

Following his stop in Pennsylvania, Romney heads to Boston for an evening fundraiser and a weekend focused on more debate preparation.

In an election centered largely on the economy, each side got some new ammunition on Thursday. The Commerce Department lowered its earlier estimate of tepid growth for the April-June quarter, while the Labor Department said the economy added 386,000 more jobs from April 2011 through March 2012 than previously believed.

Romney compared the American economy to that of Russia as he ignored signs of growth and pounced on the Commerce Department's downward revision.

"By the way, Russia's GDP growth is at 4 percent. And we're at 1.3. This is unacceptable," he said. "The president does not understand how to get this economy to work for the American people."

Graphics chips are for more than just eye candy

CHANCES are there is a graphics chip in your desktop computer, and it is fuelling a revolution. These chips, called GPUs, have of late been co-opted from their original use in giving video games their impressive visuals. Their talent for parallel processing is helping to speed up everything from medical imaging to studies of the cosmos. And they could be the key to future generations of ultrapowerful smartphones and tablet computers.

Introduced by chip-maker Nvidia in 1999, these graphics processing units took personal computing by storm. Augmenting a PC's central processing unit with a GPU allowed software designers to transform, say, video games, into the immersive virtual environments we now take for granted.

Software initiatives, such as Nvidia's CUDA, launched in 2007, and the Apple-led OpenCL project from 2008, opened up these chips for non-graphics applications.

Researchers have been reaping the benefits ever since. The chip's ability to calculate in parallel makes it ideal for tasks such as climate modelling. Here, virtual representations of the Earth are broken down into a three-dimensional grid, and mathematical equations can run simultaneously at millions of different points on the grid.

The same holds for medical imaging. A 5-minute functional MRI scan can accumulate tens of millions of three-dimensional units of data, each representing a tiny volume of the brain. This data has to be processed to compensate for, say, head movement, to create a more accurate scan. This can take days to process even with the multiple processing cores in the latest central processing units that allow for some, albeit limited, parallel processing.

Anders Eklund of Link?ping University, Sweden, and colleagues have shown that certain fMRI calculations, which used to take about 24 hours, are wrapped up in as little as 8 minutes using GPUs (Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine, doi.org/fsqz9m). Soon, people who come in for a scan will know the outcome almost instantly. "That's an enormous weight off anybody's mind," says John Owens, a computer scientist at the University of California, Davis.

The CPU is far from dead though: in the past few years, the rise of the multicore processor has given the nerve centre of every computer a new lease of life. The big manufacturers are now doubling up on chips, with designs for chipsets that put both GPU and CPU on the same piece of silicon. These include Intel's latest line, Ivy Bridge, Advanced Micro Devices' Fusion and Nvidia's Denver chips.

GPU-computing can even extend to studying the cosmos. Debbie Bard of Stanford University in California and colleagues have shown that the chips can help crunch the torrents of data that come in from a range of next-generation astronomical instruments. "The larger the data set, the more advantageous it is to use the GPU," she says.

This is just the beginning, predicts Owens. The chips are already finding their way into smartphones and tablets, mostly to power high-resolution screens and applications like 3D mapping. But as GPUs become ubiquitous in mobile devices, they will pave the way for applications that no one has yet thought about. "The future has barely been scratched from this point of view," Owens says.

Live?from the Built Green Conference 2012: Keynote Speaker Denis

Wow what a great lunch

King County Green Tools staff Patti Southard and Kinney (missed the other name) made introductory remarks for Mr. Hayes. First they gave us some statistics and diversion rates for construction materials. Newest edition of the Construction Recycling Directory just came out. He suggests that builders use 2 bins on sites so the sorting is done immediately because it is very time consuming to sort it later. He also mentioned the 20/20 Refit Challenge. Rehabilitating older homes to become healthy, comfortable, energy efficient homes is a lot more sustainable than deconstructing a structure and building something new It?s all about keeping materials out of the waste stream.

Patti thanks the staff at Built Green for creating such a great model that others in the country look to. Collaboration is key. She says every day we are working on making this a beter planet it is like writing a love letter to the Earth. She says we are lucky to have the kind of leadership we have in our area ? with Denis Hayes, the founder of Earth Day, having joined our community. She shared her own memories of how Earth Day is a holiday not for religion or anything else, but for doing something for others and the plant.

Denis Hayes
Funny guy! Seems to be speaking extemporaneously. He said normally he gives a rousing motivational speech about becoming more green. But he doesn?t have to do that here, since everyone in the room is involved in the green building industry. He talked about how the Bullitt Foundation stat=started out in a hayloft, and since joining the organization the Board agreed to the construction of a green building. The piece of property the foundation owned called for something larger than an office for seven people, and now they have a 52,000 sq ft mixed use building. Billed as ?The Greenest Building in the World? He said there are 26 geothermal wells that are 400 feet deep. ALL of the energy that will be used in this building will be generated by the building. Net Zero is not accomplished very often. Hayes talked about trying to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge. He spoke about sourcing materials for the building, finding contractors who would

Bullitt Center ? Hard costs up through TI: 17% more expensive than regular Class A office space and found they can?t rent it for any more than regular Class A office space. If you are a tenant in their building and meet ll of your energy goals, you have no energy costs, it?s free. Society needs to start placing real value on things that endure. These major investments count for something. He talked a lot oabout the features that went into this new building. I missed the last tour a couple weeks ago! So I sent an email to find out when the next tour will be. Defnitely have to get it on it.

If I had to do it gain knwoing what I know now and this will sound ridiculous ? this is the first time I have worked on a building, but it has given me a lot of humility. So he deerred t a lot of te experts, vendors, and contractors, for elements and aesthetics that if he woudl have won on if he had stuck to his guns. And he would hold out to have it his way next time.

B2B Social Media Marketing & Community Building Insights from ...

Determining why your company should engage in a social media plan is one of the first and most important steps.? Working towards the ?what? without the ?why? can result in wasted time, money and set a B2B marketing program off track.

Next up in our B2B marketing innovation interview series is Mack Collier, a well known and respected social media strategist and trainer specializing in helping companies better connect with their customers via social media.?Mack is also the force behind #BlogChat, the largest organized chat on Twitter.

In this interview, Mack dives into four things brands can do to cultivate and connect with fans, as well as well as three basic questions every marketer should ask themselves before embarking on a social media marketing program. He also offers sage advice on B2B innovation and tools.

Please tell us about you and the kind of B2B marketing work you?re most excited about.? Solve any tough ones lately?

The thing that really excites me about blogging, social media, content marketing, etc. is that I think we are getting back to the idea of creating marketing communications that can also create value for our customers. ?I think we are getting away from the days when you ?win? the sale by simply banging customers over the head with your commercial 15 times, to creating content that also creates value, which helps build connections as well as your expertise.

What are the essential starting points small businesses should consider when employing social media marketing and blogging in the B2B space?

I think the most important starting point for a small business or ANY business using social media or starting a blog is to answer this question: ?We are using social media because we want to ________.?

Too many businesses start using social media without asking themselves WHY they want to start using social media. ?(Hint: ?Cause everyone else is? is NOT an acceptable answer) ?Once your business can fill in that blank, then you can craft a social media strategy that actually helps you reach that goal.

There?s a common association that it?s tough to come up with new B2B marketing ideas, but as you know, innovation exists within B2B as much or more as it does with consumer marketing ? just in different ways.? What?s your process for coming up with new and innovative ideas for your B2B marketing efforts?

It?s tough for most businesses to come up with ANY new marketing ideas. ?But I think that?s often the case because businesses view their new marketing effort as ?How is this going to help us stand out?? vs ?How is this going to help us create value for our customers?? ?I think the growing trend of embracing content marketing is really helping businesses to review the idea of creating value via marketing, which I think is awesome.

An essential part of building a business online is to attract and engage a community.? What are your most practical tips that companies and brands should consider for connecting with and cultivating fans?

There are four things that brands can do to cultivate and connect with their fans:

  1. Be a part of the audience they want to connect with. ?Look at the world through the eyes of your customers. ?How does Harley Davidson do market research? ?By jumping on their Harleys and going for a ride on the weekend with their customers. ?The brands that do the best job of connecting with their fans look at their world the eyes of their most passionate customers.
  2. Embrace your fans. ?The biggest mistake most brands make when it comes to their fans is that they leave them alone. ?Your fans are special people that WANT a deeper connection with your brand. ?Reward that desire and look for ways to build a deeper connection with them.
  3. Focus on the ?Bigger Idea? behind your brand. ?Don?t focus on your product or service, focus on what your customers do with your product. ?For example, in its content Patagonia focuses on issues that are relevant to its customers, such as sustainability, protecting the environment, and being active outdoors. ?This approach makes its products more relevant to its customers.
  4. Look for ways to shift control to your fans. ?If you want to make your marketing more relevant to your customers, make sure it is spoken in a voice that they can understand and relate to; Their own. ?I?m not talking about simply crowdsourcing your marketing, but understanding your customers, and giving them input into the direction of your brand. ?Remember that your fans WANT to be heard by your brand. ?They want to know you are listening, and if you show them you are, that only validates their love of your brand.

Developing a solid B2B marketing plan takes research, and understanding of the customer goals, pain points and journey.? What are some of the most common myths or mistakes you?ve seen with B2B marketing planning?? Any tips on how to be more successful??

One of the great things about the rise of social media and digital communications tools is that it makes it far easier for engaged businesses to better learn about and understand its customers. ?There?s an exponential increase in content being created by?well everyone, and that content can be distilled down into valuable customer insights for the businesses that are willing to put in the legwork.

I think one of the biggest mistakes B2B companies can make is to form a picture of who their customers are based on outdated or incomplete information. ?Leverage these new social tools as a way to better understand and segment your customers to improve your marketing efforts and make them more effective and efficient.

With all the hype in the business marketing media, it?s tempting for companies to chase trending B2B marketing tactics like visual marketing or social networking.? How do you decide what the right B2B marketing tactical mix is for companies that you work with?

I think all companies really need to focus on their available resources and do NOT fall for the ?shiny object syndrome? and start using whatever the ?hot? social media tool or site of the month is. ?I think it goes back to asking and answering three basic questions:

  1. Who are we trying to reach?
  2. What are we trying to accomplish?
  3. What are our resources?

Let your goals define the tools you will use, not the other way around.

Companies that are in search of business growth with limited resources can often close part of the gap with tools.? What tools do you recommend for B2B marketers (or marketers in general) to get more out of their online content and social media investments?

Well I hate to give advice on which tool is best because I think that your goals/resources/audience defines the tools for you. ?But, when it comes to social media, I think right now there are two main tools to look at for B2Bs:

  1. Blogs. ?I will always love blogs because with a blog you control the content platform. ?That?s huge, and it allows you to create content that search engines love.
  2. LinkedIn. ?It?s simply more business-oriented, and there?s a higher probability that you can find key decision-makers and cultivate a relationship with them.

Now in general, it?s impossible to ignore Facebook simply because it?s userbase is so massive. ?If you are a business operating in the tech sector, it might be worthwhile to investigate Google Plus as well.

Please share your advice for other B2B marketers out there on how they can be more innovative.

In general, I think we all tend to overthink marketing. ?I think it all goes back to understanding who we are trying to connect with and how we can create communications that are valuable for them. ?For B2C brands, that might be less about the product and more about how customers will use the product and what they will do with it. ?For B2Bs, the idea is the same, its more about how another business will use your product or service to more effectively and efficiently run its business. ?I think a good starting point is to ask yourself ?What business problem does our product or service help solve?? ?Create marketing that focuses on the direct benefit for businesses.

Thank you for your insights Mack!

Taking gingko biloba does not improve memory, study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Taking Gingko biloba supplements does not improve memory, attention or problem solving in healthy individuals, according to researchers from the University of Hertfordshire.

The paper, published in Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental, is the first meta-analytic review examining the effects of Gingko biloba on healthy people across all age groups. The researchers led by Professor Keith Laws found zero impact on the cognitive functions whatever the age of the people, the dose taken or the length of time of taking Gingko biloba supplements.

Gingko biloba, the oldest tree living species, has been used extensively in traditional Chinese herbal medicine for thousands of years.? Today, it is one of the most widely used plant-based products available without prescription in Europe and North America, where is it marketed as a dietary supplement to treat blood disorders and, more specifically, to enhance memory both for healthy individuals and also for those trying to ward off Alzheimer?s Disease.

Keith Laws, Professor of psychology, said: ?Gingko biloba has been widely used for a number of years to reduce the mental decline associated with aging.? But more recently it has been marketed as a memory enhancing supplement for healthy individuals ? and it is crucial to establish the validity for such claims.

?Our findings show that taking Gingko biloba supplements at any age to boost memory have no impact at all ? and may be a waste of time and money.?

The paper, ?Is Gingko biloba a cognitive enhancer in healthy individuals? A meta-analysis?, examines the published research of thirteen randomised control trials of over 1000 healthy individuals across all ages.?

Other recently published studies have also shown that there is no evidence to support taking Gingko biloba supplements to protect against developing Alzheimer?s Disease.

How do we turn things around? - Talk About Marriage

H and I are at a real low in the marriage, and have been at (what' hopefully) bottom for a year now. The basic issue is that I feel emotionally neglected, even abandoned, in the relationship. I think he's totally happy with the relationship.

It's hard to make this all short enough to fit in a post, but here's an example, the biggest I can think of: last summer, I was going through a lot with our kids. We have 2, and the youngest is now 4. She's difficult. Last summer she was throwing 10-20 tantrums a day and waking up 5-10 times per night (often to have another tantrum). Because I nursed and mostly stayed at home, I always had night duty. However, the sleep deprivation was killing me. I begged my husband, sobbing, to just take the girls out of the house ONE morning so I could sleep in (I tried sleeping in with the girls in the house, but they'd always wake me up. H used to wake me up too, saying I shouldn't "sleep in too late," until I lost it, cursed at him, and locked the bedroom door one morning).

It's so hard to keep this short. The bottom line is, he said he'd help me out but he never did. In retrospect, I should have demanded that he take the girls out every saturday morning to let me sleep, but I was so fixated on just one morning of sleep that it didn't occur to me.

So basically, I feel like I was drowning, and he just sat there and watched me. I got sick from what I really believe was the emotional and physical exhaustion, and even now I'm not fully recovered.

I just don't know what to do now. I feel betrayed. I feel like I don't have a partner I can lean on. It wasn't just one day that he let me down, it was day after day of not helping. I can't tell you how many times I cried and told him I was afraid I was going to have a nervous breakdown if I didn't get some sleep. Every time he'd say, ok, no problem. Then he'd do nothing.

I don't want to get a divorce. I would, no hesitation, if we didn't have kids, but I don't want to put them through that. Other than this total inability to take care of me, he's not a bad person. Not abusive, hard worker, no addictions. But when I think about doing the work myself to repair the damage that, in my opinion HE has done, I just don't have the motivation. I resent that I have to fix things when I've worked so hard all along to keep them going. I bought us and read 7 principles for making marriage work and it really resonated with me. I asked him to read it too, so we could do the exercises, and he got a few pages into it and then quit.

When I bring it up, he says he definitely wants to work on our issues. But that doesn't translate into any action. I guess that sums up the issues pretty well--I don't get any initiative from him. Way back when, I thought it was a communication thing... that if I could just figure out HOW to get through to him, he'd listen. I tried writing to him, but it didn't work.

I don't know. How do I turn things around?

AmEx, Starbucks announce plans for Passbook integration: both live by end of the month

AmEx, Starbucks announce plans for iOS 6 Passbook integration both live by end of the month

When it launched with iOS 6 this Wednesday, Apple's Passbook mobile-ticketing feature boasted a handful of high-profile partners -- including Fandango, Live Nation, Lufthansa and Ticketmaster -- but that list still leaves plenty of room for fleshing out. According to Venture Beat, AmEx is launching integration with Passbook later today. The credit card company's Passbook functionality will include notifications for new account transactions, along with the ability to view your current balance and redeem membership rewards points. The service can also use smartphones' location to verify charges flagged as suspicious.

Starbucks, which was featured in an early Passbook demo at WWDC, also announced the timeline for its integration with the service, tweeting today that an "update is coming at the end of the month" and offering no further details. Judging by Apple's earlier previews, Passbook will let customers pay with a Starbucks card. The coffee chain's Passbook functionality looks to be quite similar to its partnership with Square, which will be the go-to mobile payments option for non-iOS customers when it launches this fall.

How to Fix Food That's Too Salty [Crowdhacker]

How to Fix Food That's Too SaltyKitchen mis-measurers and victims of loosened salt-shakers, rejoice! There is a cure to your oversalted dish. The kitchen cats at Stack Exchange offer techniques to unsalt your overseasoned foods.

Question:

How do I fix food that got extra salty?

I imagine this depends on what the food is. With spaghetti, you can add water or change water if you detect it on time. But what about grilled meat? Or a tomato sauce?

? Originally asked by Vinko Vrsalovic

Answer: Raw Potato

Slice a raw potato and add it to the over-salted sauce. As it cooks it'll draw in the salty liquid.

You may need to add more liquids to keep the sauce from drying out.

? Answered by Kev

Answer: More Food

1. Determine correct ratio of food to salt.
2. Add more food until proper ratio is achieved.

Or just serve extra beer with it.

? Answered by Shog9

Answer: Under-Season & Adjust

Good practice is to under-season food when cooking and adjust, the seasoning at the end if necessary. It's very difficult to fix over-seasoned food at the end of cooking, and excess salt is also bad for your health.

? Answered by LeopardSkinPillBoxHat

Answer: Lemon

I sometimes add a bit of lemon juice...works to a degree.

? Answered by Tobias Op Den Brouw

Answer: Parsley

Parsley, or other very leafy stuff. Specifically, I've noticed that adding parsley to a dish that's too salty works wonders. It's good for almost any sauce you're making, as well as pasta or casserole. Probably won't work so well with over-salted meat though. Perhaps a parsley and mint sauce for the meat?
